The project concerns the Salerno – Reggio Calabria motorway from km 139 + 000 (south of the Laurio Nord junction) to km 148 + 000 (near the entrance to the Fossino tunnel). The project layout has a leght of about 9,650 km and was proposed variant as of the original one. Along the route there are: n. 3 tunnels (Serra Rotonda, Sardinia II and Costa del Monte), n.1 artificial tunnel (Sardinia I) and n.4 viaducts (Caffaro, Piano della Menta, Campo del Galdo and Casale Civile).

SOIL has been in charge of the detailed design for construction and of the technical assistance during works of the Serra Rotonda, Costa del Monte, Sardinia I and Sardinia II tunnels.

Almost the entire section of the Serra Rotonda Gallery has been excavated in limestone.

The tunnel was excavated with the Drill & Blast method and the temporary liner was made by steel ribs plus spritz beton.
